Hide your identity on the Internet with Anonymity 4 Proxy.

Anonymity 4 Proxy is a freeware web proxy. A web proxy server is an intermediary through which you connect to the Internet. This adds a layer of obscurity for servers that may want to identify you and track your activities. While a lot of modern web proxies are very hands-off for basic use, this program is more old school and actually has you select a proxy from a list and offers many settings as well.

Anonymity 4 Proxy is powerful in that it works at the operating system level. In order words, the protection it provides isn’t limited to a particular web browser, for instance. Once running, all of your Internet traffic on that PC no matter where it originates from is routed through the proxy server you’ve chosen. In addition to HTTP, it supports HTTPS and FTP.

The main UI has five primary tabs: Proxy Activity, Proxy Check, Proxy Options, Browser Options and Security & Redirection Rules. Proxy Check is where you’ll discover the available proxies and can evaluate them. You can evaluate based on certain details, such as extension, country of origin, response time and so forth, and you can run tests as well in order to determine performance.

The other tabs contain dozens perhaps hundreds of settings. Many of these options are global, which means that they dictate program behavior regardless of which proxy server you’re using. Others are server-specific, and the program can actually save those settings so that they’re in place should you use that server again. There are also browser options so that you can determine web browsing behavior.

Performance overall was solid in our testing. However, we only had a limited selection of proxy servers to work with. These were all free servers, and so availability and reliability could be a bit hit or miss. When a reliable connection was made, even heavy downloads went off without a hitch.

This is a trial version of the software. Not all features are accessible. Furthermore, the program was originally designed for Windows 95. It does work in newer Windows versions via compatibility mode, but all support for this program has long ended. It was lasted updated in 2004.

Another issue is its Windows 95 style UI, which will up-skin to XP. While this may have been leading edge back then, it’s a bit of an eyesore now. It’s also clunky. Doing anything of substance is a bit of a chore, but on the plus side, it is mostly a set-and-forget program that you won’t have to tinker with much once set up.
